The finer points of a dic pic.
When doing creative things, it’s often said you should pull inspiration from what you know. As a gay guy, i obviously know a lot about dicks. So of course the male member would be a large part of my artwork family.
(Plus, as my partner noted: They’re easier to draw than hands. 😂)
But why the specific focus on them in my dic pic series? It may surprise you i have reasons beyond my general attractions.
So, i figured i’d use my inaugural Thursday Thoughts to discuss.
Don’t Get Cocky - Or Do
Firstly, cocks are full of character; every one has a kind of penile personality. i find every facet fascinating: every intriguing vein, every bend and curve. Big, small; cut, uncut; every shape and shade. Every one is beautiful in its own way, and i want to capture that in each picture.
i like the idea of penile portraits because in all the unique qualities of every cock, there is a real glimmer of the guy behind it. The eyes may be the window to the soul, but a man’s meat reveals his essence.
Plus, there are infinite ways to draw one, just like the person it’s attached to. Different angles show different textures, shapes, and forms. It’s exciting to arrange the compositions together each time — plus stylizing the pubic hair!
Blurred Lines
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, this is part of an ongoing dialogue thread that runs through all of my art: the arbitrary line between fine art and porn. It is frankly ridiculous that obscenity is measured by the amount of blood flowing to a particular human appendage; as if popping wood is any less natural than eating or breathing.
Why do we pretend otherwise? Why do we make up certain lines and boundaries that aren’t based in any science, any necessity, any sense?
It’s a double standard, really. Boobs and vaginas are a dime a dozen in movies, TV shows, and all across artworks. But peen… well, every time we get a flash of a flesh pole on screen, the Internet explodes with the juicy news. Young adults wandering museums blush and giggle at even the most innocent pecker poking out of a painted bush.
And so i’ve longed to ask why that is and challenge our cultural Puritanism with even more penis.
And yet, the other side of the log is worth exploring, too: Why and how would an erect dick alter the meaning and context around something like Michelangelo’s “David”? (Because even a semi-subtle change WOULD make an — erm — big difference to that monumental work of art…)
That’s why i’m doing what i’m doing (in addition to my obviously happy homo-ness).
Maybe i’ll talk more about the specific artists that have inspired and informed me in my stylizations in a future Thursday Thought. But for now, at least you know i have reasons why i’m doing what i’m doing — beyond the fun of it. ☺️
